Jimmy's Biography
A jazz-trained saxophonist with an appetite for crossing genre lines, Jimmy Rainey brings an adventurous ear to everything he touches - from improvised music to Balkan-Dub fusion to electronic production.Based in Ōtautahi Christchurch since returning from studies in Amsterdam in 2020, he plays with Yurt Party, a six-piece Balkan-Latin-Dub group whose two studio albums (Yurt Party, 2023; 200, 2025) have taken them to Woodford Folk Festival, CubaDupa, and Electric Avenue.He has performed and recorded with Marlon Williams & Delaney Davidson, Scribe, 2XM, Byllie-jean, and the Symposium Jazz Orchestra.Jimmy is Artist in Residence at The Piano: Centre for Music and the Arts and founded 03 Sessions - a Christchurch concert series that has presented over 150 shows of original and improvised music since 2020, now in its sixth year.
